Attractions Aceh Tsunami Museum - Aceh Tsunami Museum is a museum designed as a symbolic monument to the earthquake and tsunami of the Indian Ocean in 2004 as well as an education center and emergency shelter if a tsunami occurs again.
The design of Aceh Tsunami Museum was designed by an architect from Indonesia, Ridwan Kamil. The museum is a four-story structure with an area of 2,500 m² whose curved walls are covered in geometric relief. Inside the Aceh Tsunami Museum, visitors enter through a narrow and dark alley between two high water walls.
To recreate the atmosphere and panic during the tsunami, the walls of the Aceh Tsunami museum are decorated with pictures of people dancing the Saman, symbolic meaning of the strength, discipline, and religious beliefs of the Acehnese. The Tsunami Museum building commemorates the victims, whose names are listed on the wall of one of the innermost rooms of the museum, and the members of the community who survived this disaster.
Apart from its role as a memorial to the dead, the museum will also serve as a place of refuge from such disasters in the future, including an "evacuation hill" for visitors in the event of a tsunami.
