According to legend, this temple was built by a Brahmin who wandered from Java. At that time the ruler of Land Lot, Bendesa Braben, was jealous of him because his followers started to leave him and follow Danghyang Nirartha. Bendita Beraben ordered Danghyang Nirartha to leave Land Lot. He agreed and before leaving Land Lot, with his strength, he moved the boulder to the middle of the beach (not into the middle of the sea) and built a temple there. He also changed his shawl to become a snake guarding the temple. This snake still exists today and scientifically this snake is a type of sea snake which has the characteristics of a flat tail like a fish, black and yellow stripes, and has poison 3 times stronger than a cobra snake.
